Stability

I set up the light tent for some product photography, mostly of a Toshiba Libretto. Previously I've used a workbench, in the garage, to support the tent. This time I wanted the base of the light tent to be high enough that I didn’t have to bend when taking the photos. I decided to set up in the bedroom, on a small cupboard, and dig out a tripod. I can’t find my carbon fibre tripod. A shame, as I'd like to sell it. It would have been too short for this set up, so I dusted off the Manfrotto 055. That was easy to find, it’s pretty hard to lose something that big. This is fitted with the wonderful 322RC2 ball head, that mates to an RC4 quick release plate. I have several of these plates, but the only camera currently attached to one is my EOS 5D MK III. It’s been a while since that’s seen active duty. Nearly one and a half years since I last used it, at Dublin Zoo.

Canon 5D Mark III

It took me a while to get used to the EOS 5D3 again. It’s the best camera I own, but it’s one I always have mixed feelings about. Once I settle into a photo shoot I become very happy with it. But every time I pick it up for casual photography… well it just doesn’t grab me. I’m not sure why that is. It’s a bulky and complex camera, but it’s not that different from my 7D. Though the 7D spends 90% of its time glued to the 100-400mm lens. I’ve used that EOS 7D combination so much that its become almost second nature. Whereas the 5D3 is, to me, more of a general purpose tool. It used to get a decent work out during the winter, when the light levels were challenging for the 7D, and when I went on my Christmas holiday. I guess the 5D3 is in the “for sale” pile, which I’m sure I’ll come to regret.
